In the 2025/2026 academic year, we tested three different approaches in selected courses at DOBA University of Applied Sciences, to answer the question: can artificial intelligence improve students’ understanding of course content and their study experience when used as a tool for deeper learning? We introduced artificial intelligence (AI) thoughtfully, as a support for explanations, work organisation and personalised learning. The results of the pilot project show that the approach was successful and well received by students.
The AI tutor, a digital mentor with access to all course information – deadlines, requirements, materials and technical details – was met with the greatest enthusiasm. In addition to providing explanations, it also answered very specific organisational questions, making it much easier for students to navigate the course. They used it for quizzes, study notes and checking their understanding of the content, and almost 80% of participants were satisfied with it. One student described it as “a mentor who is available at any time”.
In addition to the tutor, we introduced two other AI personas. Ana acted as a discussion partner, with whom students could check their understanding and obtain additional examples, while Dora used the Socratic approach, guiding students towards answers through questions. For some, this was an excellent exercise in critical thinking, while others preferred more direct answers. This variety of approaches enabled each student to find the type of interaction that suited them best, which is an important element of personalised learning.
Among 140 students, more than two thirds highlighted that AI saved them time, while almost three quarters said that it helped them understand the course content better. As many as 72% would like to have similar AI options available in other courses as well. We identified a number of challenges, particularly in formulating clear questions and the desire for more specific feedback; however, students used the AI tools responsibly and critically, confirming that technology can strengthen academic integrity.
The answer to the question we posed at the beginning is clear:
AI can enhance the learning process when used thoughtfully and in a pedagogically justified manner.
Going forward, we will continue to introduce AI, refine our approaches and actively encourage students to use AI thoughtfully and responsibly in their learning. Our vision remains the same – AI that supports understanding and fosters academic growth.
