Erasmus+ Experience: Professional Growth and Personal Development in Tenerife

As part of the Erasmus+ programme, Jerneja Jamšek, a student on the master programme International Innovative Business Management, completed a two-month traineeship at MBestCare in Tenerife, Spain. The mobility period, which took place between April and June 2026, enabled her to gain valuable professional experience in an international environment, while also bringing her numerous personal insights, new friendships and greater self-confidence.

»I went on the mobility programme hoping to gain practical experience in an international company, but I returned home with so much more – new knowledge, friendships, greater confidence in myself and a completely different outlook on life,« said Jerneja.

Jerneja completed her traineeship at MBestCare, a company specialising in personalised wellness retreats and promoting preventive health and holistic wellbeing. Her responsibilities were primarily related to marketing, digital content and business development. She prepared website content, descriptions of wellness programmes, marketing copy and newsletters, maintained the CRM database, researched potential business partners and helped create content for social media.

»A large part of my work involved research, competitor analysis and finding ways to improve the user experience. I worked very independently, while always feeling supported by the team,« she wrote in her report.

During her stay, Jerneja lived in Santa Cruz de Tenerife with her local host, Blanca, and her therapy dog, Nina. Her contact with local people played an important part in shaping her experience, allowing her to discover the island beyond the usual tourist routes. »Blanca was not simply my host; she was someone who opened the door to the everyday lives of local people,« she emphasised. Together with Blanca and her colleague Hauche, she explored the culture, history and everyday life of the Canary Islands. Her conversations with local people showed her that no place is perfect, while also helping her appreciate Slovenia even more.

Erasmus did not only give me a new perspective on life abroad, but also a completely new view of Slovenia.

Jerneja sees personal development as the greatest benefit of her Erasmus mobility. For the first time in her life, she lived independently abroad for two months, which helped her become more self-reliant, adaptable and confident. »I went to Tenerife as a student looking for new experiences. I returned home as a more confident, independent and inwardly calmer person.«

The island’s natural environment also had a profound impact on her. Among her most memorable experiences, she highlights visiting Teide National Park, the picturesque village of Masca, the tropical forests of Anaga and trying surfing for the first time. »At first I was afraid, but I quickly realised that I actually enjoyed surfing.«

The people she met along the way also left a lasting impression. New friendships with people from different countries, shared trips, hikes, cultural events and karaoke evenings became an important part of her Erasmus experience.

Jerneja wholeheartedly recommends Erasmus mobility to other students as well. »It is not merely an opportunity to complete a traineeship or study abroad. It is a life experience that changes you both professionally and personally.«

Her Erasmus story confirms that mobility is not only about gaining new knowledge and professional experience, but also about personal growth, discovering other cultures and broadening one’s view of the world.

When I look back today, I feel that a new version of me was born in Tenerife. Calmer. More present. More grateful.
